OGMORE DOWN SCOUTS

return to main Clubs page

The Scouts organisation has several sections: Beavers for ages 6 to 8 years; Cubs for ages 8 to 10˝ years; Scouts for ages from 10˝ to 14 years; Explorers for young adults; Networkers for ages from 18 to 25 years who may also be Leaders, Assistants or part of their local Scout Fellowship.

At present the Ogmore Down Scout group has a Cub Scout section which meets from 6.30 pm to 7.45 pm and a Scout troop which meets from 7.45 pm to 9.00 pm on a Monday evening (term-time) in the Scout Hall, St. Brides Major.  If you would like to help run the Ogmore Down Scout group, perhaps to prepare refreshments or assist with activities, your contribution would be welcomed and much appreciated.

If you would like a more structured role, the following leaders are required in 2008; if you are unable to take on one of these positions, do you know someone else who may be interested?

Cub Scout Leader – This is the hands-on scouting leadership role that people usually think of when they think of Scouts. It is a position that requires about an hour and a half time with the children a week with some preparation time around this. There is a structured training programme in place that new adults to scouting are supported with and there is also a wealth or resources to support the programme itself which is not dissimilar to a school curriculum that focuses on numerous areas of child development.

Group Scout Leader – This position is not directly associated with the children in scouting at all. It is almost a ‘branch manager’ type position that suits people that are comfortable managing other adults and have organisational skills. The general role includes chairing meetings, ensuring effective communication within the group and managing the scout groups’ relationship with the wider community.

The Scout Association has a clear purpose which is:

"To help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international community."

Scouting achieves its purpose and works well when young people enjoy "learning by doing" in partnership with adults.  They do this by:

Taking part in a variety of activities
Exploring the outdoors
Participating in teams
Taking responsibility

The three principles which underpin Scouting are:

Duty to self
Duty to others
Duty to God

Scouting succeeds when it is:

Fun
Attractive to young people
Fulfilling for adult members
Trusted by parents and carers
Valued by society
