Remember to check with the recipient/s that you are returning items to the correct place, and items you wish to donate will be useful, suitable and wanted. With regard to recycling, if you do not live within the Vale of Glamorgan Council area please contact your local council as details vary from region to region according to the facilities that are available, for example, some cannot accept any/all types of plastic or do collect household kitchen waste and foil. There are Household Recycling Centres at Llandow Trading Estate and Hayes Road, Sully. Both sites have recycling banks for: glass, paper, cans, Tetra Pak cartons, textiles, plastic, foil, garden waste, car batteries and waste oil. Sully also has recycling banks for cardboard and wood. For larger items such as dishwashers, electric radiators, fridge/freezers televisions, tumble dryers, washing machines, there is a ring and request collection scheme. The Vale of Glamorgan website has an A-Z giving information on where to take your recycling. ADVERTISING LITERATURE (NO envelopes or plastic) Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service, container in Fox & Hounds car park, at Supermarket or Household Recycling Centre. AIDS FOR ELDERLY/DISABLED (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable for return/donation) Return to Occupational Therapy Department at local hospital. BATTERIES (Car and domestic-use such as from cameras, clocks, torches, toys, etc.) Take to Household Recycling Centre. BEDDING & BLANKETS (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable for donation) Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting homeless people or charity
shop. BICYCLES (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable for donation) Donate to Playgroup or Youth Club. Donate to the New Deal project in Barry which is a scheme offering young people the chance to have training in bike maintenance and repairs. The bicycles are then sold to help fund the project. Free collection service every Tuesday within the Vale. Ring 01446 421508 for more details. Visit Re-Cycle website which collects, repairs and ships second hand bicycles and spare parts to Africa to improve the lives of those who have to travel many miles on a daily basis. Donate to charity shop, local school, church, etc., for bring and buy sales, or donate/sell to second hand bookshop. Visit Bridgend Lions Club website which since 1994 has held a charity book fair every year around March/April to raise money for a variety of local good causes. Unwanted or surplus books, CDs and DVDs can usually be taken to the YMCA, Angel Street, Bridgend, between the hours of 10.00 am and 5.00 pm weekdays for several months before the event. Look out for notices in the local press and shops which also give telephone number/s to ring to arrange collection of larger quantities. CANS (Aluminium, tinplate or steel. This includes, for example, baked beans, soup, fish, soft drinks, beer, pet food tins. Remember to rinse/wash & squash as items contaminated with food will be left behind. NO paint tins, aerosols or foil.) Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service or container at Household Recycling Centre. CARDBOARD (Do NOT put in paper banks. Remove any packaging, e.g. plastic and polystyrene. NO fruit juice type cartons or cardboard drink cups.) Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service. Place smaller items, eg cereal boxes, in a carrier bag or tie in a bundle. Leave larger items on the kerbside. Ensure cardboard is flattened. Take cardboard to the Household Recycling Centre at Hayes Road, Sully. CHRISTMAS ITEMS See separate entries under Xmas CLOTHES Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting the homeless or charity shop. COMICS Donate to doctors/dentists surgery for waiting room, Out Patients Department/Children’s Centre at local hospital/clinic
or charity shop. CROCKERY & CUTLERY Donate to homeless hostel or charity supporting the homeless, charity shop or local playgroup/club. CRUTCHES Return to Accident & Emergency Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital. DRINK CARTONS (Such as Tetra Pak) Take to Household Recycling Centre. Some Tesco stores also have a collection point. DVDs & CDs See entry under Books EASTER EGGS Visit Bridge FM website a local radio station based in Bridgend which organise Make a Local Child Smile campaigns; Easter Eggs are collected then given to local charities for distribution throughout the area. ELECTRICAL ITEMS (This includes appliances such as: cookers, freezers, fridges, microwaves, washing machines; and household equipment such as computer monitors, energy saving bulbs, fluorescent tubes and TVs; as well as small items such as CD/DVD players, clocks, DIY tools, hairdryers, irons, kettles, keyboards, radios and toasters; and even electric toys, PSP games, shavers, toothbrushes.) Take to Household Recycling Centre. Vale of Glamorgan Council can arrange to collect large, bulky electrical equipment. ENGINE OIL Take to Household Recycling Centre. FOIL (This includes take-away cartons, kitchen foil, milk bottle tops, frozen food containers, pie dishes etc., which should be washed to avoid smells and squashed. NO metallised plastic film such as that used for some bread, crisp and biscuit packets. To check, scrunch the packet into a ball; if it retains its shape as a ball it is foil but if it returns to its original shape then it is metallised plastic and cannot be recycled ) Take to the recycling centre at Ty Verlon Industrial Estate, Barry, run by charity Scope. Visit The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) which sponsors this scheme. Some supermarkets such as Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose also have banks to collect clean foil. Take to Household Recycling Centre for recycling. FOREIGN CURRENCY Visit Barnardo's website which helps children, young people in need and the most vulnerable, as well as providing fostering and adoption services. FURNITURE (Ensure in good condition and of good quality, and check whether suitable item/s for donation) Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting the homeless or charity shop. Visit British Red Cross website which helps people affected by natural disasters, to find missing relatives and offers many other types of assistance, as well as teaching first aid. The Llantwit Major shop accepts furniture of good quality. GARDEN WASTE From April to November recycle via the Vale of Glamorgan kerbside
collection. (time scale extended in 2008) Take to Household Recycling Centre for recycling/disposal. Alternatively, compost garden waste. You can also add the following to your domestic compost: uncooked fruit and vegetable peelings and waste; tea bags; coffee grounds; cardboard egg boxes; crushed eggshells; small amounts of paper and cardboard; wood-stove ashes; herbivore pet waste (eg rabbit, guinea pig). Do not include cooked fruit and vegetables or weeds. Visit Wiggly Wigglers website which has information on worm composting, bird feeders, making a pond and other environmentally friendly projects, or visit The Accidental Ecomaniac website. GLASS JARS AND BOTTLES (This includes mincemeat, pasta, paste, jam jars, non-refund pop/beer/wine bottles, etc. Remember to remove tops/caps. Rinse jars/bottles before recycling as items contaminated with food will be left behind. Return milk bottles to the milkman. NO Pyrex or Visionware cooking dishes, glass crockery, window panes or broken glass.) Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service, container in Fox & Hounds car park, at Supermarket or Household Recycling Centre. GLASSES/SPECTACLES Donate to opticians (e.g. Specsavers, Dolland & Aitchson) for onward transmission to charity. Visit Vision Aid website which works in various countries, including Ethiopia, Gambia, Malawi, Peru, Russia and Vietnam. Visit Help the Aged website which collects spectacles and sends them to opticians all over the world, particularly Africa, India and Brazil. HEARING AIDS Visit Help the Aged website which collects (non-digital) hearing aids and sends them to other countries, such as India. HOUSEHOLD ITEMS Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting the homeless, charity shop or local school, church, etc., for bring and buy sales INKJET CARTRIDGES See separate entry for laser/toner cartridges Donate to St. Brides Major Primary School who have a collection box in the
foyer for ink cartridges. Contact Recycle for Charity website which can supply Freepost bags to send ink cartridges for recycling or arrange for a collection box to be provided with proceeds donated to your nominated charity Visit Bobath Cymru website (Bobath Children's Therapy Centre Wales) which helps children with cerebral palsy. IT & COMPUTER EQUIPMENT (Ensure to check whether suitable item/s for donation) Visit Oxfam website which collects old computer equipment from businesses to repair then resell to raise funds for its work in more than 40 countries and its campaign to make trade fair; Visit Recycle-IT website which collects computers and redistributes them to schools and non-profit making community projects. Equipment should not be too old/out of date and there may be a minimum number required to make the donation viable. Take to Household Recycling Centre. JAM AND/OR PICKLE JARS Re-use for home-made preserves; if there is a bee keeper in the area it is possible that small glass jars would be welcomed for the storage of honey. If you cannot find anyone who would like them, recycle with glass. JEWELLERY Many jewellers will take your old pieces and make them into something new; this can be by melting down rings and bracelets or by fashioning items into something new. Costume jewellery can be transformed too; visit Black Pearl's website for information on their discarded jewels service. JUNK MAIL, LEAFLETS, CIRCULARS (NO envelopes) Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service, container in Fox & Hounds car park, at Supermarket or Household Recycling Centre. Visit Direct Marketing Association website or Mail Preference Service website to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. Visit Postal Preference Service website to reduce the amount of unsolicited mail being delivered via the postman by having your name removed from mailing lists. See separate entries for School Uniforms and Uniforms) Donate to group involved (eg Judo, Karate, Tai
Kwon Do, football, rugby clubs, etc.) or charity shop. KITCHEN WASTE See separate entry for domestic compost listed with Garden Waste The Vale of Glamorgan Council trialled a kitchen waste recycling scheme in 2008 and the service has now been extended to other areas. LASER/TONER CARTRIDGES See separate entry for Inkjet cartridges Visit WRVS website which helps many people with a wide range of problems and needs with services such as: walking someone's dog; delivering meals on wheels; providing shelter and refreshments at times of natural disasters and major incidents; assisting with day to day activities; manning reception points at hospitals and trolley service to wards; running day centres; support to the Armed Forces. LIGHT BULBS Take energy-saving light bulbs to Household Recycling Centre and place in special bin. LINGERIE Visit Lingerieplease website which recycles unwanted lingerie by repackaging it and sending it to West Africa for resale with profits going to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. MAGAZINES Donate to doctors/dentists surgery for waiting room, Out Patients Department
at local hospital/clinic or charity shop. MEDICINE BOTTLES/CONTAINERS (Empty) Return to local pharmacy or chemist for safe disposal or re-use. MEDICINES (Unused, unwanted, out of date) Return to local pharmacy or chemist for safe disposal. (Do not use toilet or bin) METAL Small items such as scissors can be placed with cans for recycling. Take EPNS (electro-plated nickel silver) cutlery, kitchen knives to Household Recycling Centre. NEWSPAPERS Take to Dogs Trust Re-homing Centre at Pen-y-fai, Bridgend (ring to check they are
needed). OFFICE PAPER Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service, container in Fox & Hounds car park, at Supermarket or Household Recycling Centre. Office paper, especially that used for printers, is of a high quality and it may be feasible to start a recycling scheme in the workplace and send it to a waste paper merchant. OIL Take cooking oil to Household Recycling Centre. Engine oil can be taken to Household Recycling Centre or a car-servicing garage for disposal. PLASTIC (This includes mineral water/pop/milk bottles, washing up liquid bottles, shampoo bottles. Lids can also be recycled but need to be removed. Other suitable items are yoghurt/fromage frais pots, ice cream/butter/margarine tubs, ready meals and take-away food containers, as well as fruit punnets, etc. Bubblewrap and clingfilm is also accepted. Remember to rinse/wash & squash before recycling as contaminated items [eg with food] will be left behind. NO larger items, for example garden furniture, washing-up bowls and toys or polystyrene trays.) Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service or Household Recycling Centre. PLASTIC CARRIER BAGS Re-use as bin liners. Reduce the number of plastic bags you use by taking advantage of Bag for Life scheme operated by most supermarkets. Recycle via the Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service. This includes clean food bags such as for bread and fruit. Items contaminated by food will be left behind. PRINTER CARTRIDGES See separate entries for inkjet, and laser/toner cartridges Printer cartridges are used by copiers, fax machines and printers in both homes and businesses. If an inkjet has an integral print head (indicated by a metal plate on the back) it is suitable for donation. Laser/toner cartridges for printers and photocopiers can often be returned via freepost in the box your new cartridge came in or free collection may be possible. Check what type/make are accepted with the maker/charity you would like to support. Visit Lasertech website which provides recycling bins for printer cartridges, and can donate to the charity of your choice. Visit Recycling Appeal website which assists in the collection and recycling of old and empty inkjet and laser/toner cartridges that can help raise funds for charity. Visit Cartridges4Causes website which donates money to the charity of your choice for every cartridge sold. QUILTS & DUVETS (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable item/s for donation) Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting homeless people or charity
shop. No items listed but remember to reduce, re-use, recycle, repair and reclaim! Visit Action Earth website for details of projects and visit Remarkable (Pencils) Ltd website for items made from recycled products SCHOOL UNIFORMS (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable item/s for donation.) See separate entries for Kit/Sports Outfits and Uniforms Donate to local school or charity shop. Visit Uniform2 website to buy and sell second hand school uniforms, books and musical instruments on the web. SCRAP METAL Take to Household Recycling Centre. SHOES Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting the homeless or charity shop. Donate to Brantano Footwear in Bridgend which holds an annual smelly shoe campaign around February. All customers have to do is take their old shoes to collection point in the store for them to be recycled or sold off second-hand with all proceeds going to charity. Look out for details in the local press advertising when this event will be held. In 2005, any customer who took shoes along was given a voucher worth £5 off a new pair and for every £5 voucher redeemed, 50p was donated to Children in Need. Children were also given free colouring sets worth £5 and schools had a chance to win £100 if their name was mentioned when the shoes were handed over. STAMPS Donate to charity such as Dogs Trust Re-homing Centre at Pen-y-fai, Bridgend which collects stamps to raise funds. Visit RNIB (Royal National Institute of the Blind) website which collects stamps to raise funds. TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES See separate entry for Yellow Pages Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service, container in Fox & Hounds car park, at Supermarket or Household Recycling Centre. TELEPHONES BT will take back its own old domestic telephones via their sales shops. Visit RNIB (Royal National Institute of the Blind) website. Thanks to a partnership scheme with the Vale Council, local residents can help raise funds for a local guide dog puppy by recycling their old mobile phones. Collection boxes can be found at the following locations: Civic Offices in Barry; and council offices in: Penarth; Cowbridge; Llantwit Major; and the Alps Depot, Wenvoe. Visit Telephone Preference Service wesbite and Fax Preference Service website or telephone 0845 070 0702 to reduce the number of marketing calls/unsolicited telephone fax communications you receive by having your name removed from telephone lists. TEXTILES Take to Household Recycling Centre. TIME Perhaps not strictly for recycling! but if you have time to spare and would like to volunteer or take part in fund raising events for worthwhile causes consider local or national charities. TOWELS Donate to charity by taking to the Dogs Trust Re-homing Centre at
Pen-y-fai, Bridgend.. TOYS (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable item/s for donation) Donate to doctor/dentist surgery for waiting room, Out Patients Department/Children’s Centre at local hospital/clinic, school, playgroup, etc or charity shop. UNIFORMS (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable item/s for donation.) See separate entries for Kit/Sports Outfits and School Uniforms Donate to local school or organisations involved (eg Rainbows, Brownies,
Girl Guides; Girls/Boys Brigade; Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, etc.) or charity shop. VEHICLES Vale residents can dispose of unwanted vehicles via a scheme run by The Vale Community Safety Partnership (consisting of the council, South Wales Police, South Wales Fire Service and local housing associations). Ring the Vale of Glamorgan Council Office to arrange free collection and recycling of abandoned vehicles by local contractor Bayliss. In 2004/05 the number vehicles reported abandoned was 375 and for 2003/04 the figure was 530. WALKING STICKS (Not novelty type) Return metal walking sticks to Accident & Emergency Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital. Return metal or wood walking sticks to Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy Department at your local hospital. Donate to old people's home or charity shop. WHEELCHAIRS Return to supplier, such as Social Services or Invacare,
after checking procedure with them. WOOD Take to Household Recycling Centre. XMAS, BIRTHDAY & GREETINGS CARDS
AND WRAPPING PAPER
(Do not put greetings cards in paper banks nor with kerbside recycling of paper
or cardboard as they are made from different grades of paper and cannot be
accepted.

for Christmas cards to be available throughout most of January in participating W. H. Smith, T. K. Maxx and Marks &
Spencer stores. Cards from special events throughout the year can be kept
until January and recycled with the seasonal ones. In 2004 over 45 million cards were recycled - the
equivalent of saving 15,011 trees.
XMAS GIFTS Donate unwanted new Christmas presents to charity or local schools, groups, clubs, etc., for raffle prizes. Buy an extra present and donate it to a local charity. Visit Ty Hafan The Family Hospice for Young Lives website. Visit Bridge FM website a local radio station based in Bridgend which organises Make a Local Child Smile campaigns; Christmas gifts are collected then given to local charities/centres for distribution throughout the area. XMAS TREES After the festive season, recycle your (real) Christmas tree via the Vale of Glamorgan collection service. Check the local press, look out for Vale Waves (the Community Newspaper of the Vale of Glamorgan) or posters advising when you can put your (real) Christmas tree out with your rubbish ready for recycling. This is usually on the next normal collection day following the week that included Twelfth Night (ie 6th January). Remember to remove all decorations. YELLOW PAGES See separate entry for other Telephone Directories Recycle via St. Brides Major School. Visit Yellow Woods Challenge website which in partnership with The Vale Council organises a campaign whereby schoolchildren collect as many Yellow Pages telephone directories as possible for recycling into various products, raising funds for the Trust and schools. ZIMMER FRAMES Return to Accident & Emergency Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
