Please note, these are personal ideas and thoughts.  Remember to check with the recipient/s that you are returning items to the correct place, and items you wish to donate will be useful, suitable and wanted.  With regard to recycling, if you do not live within the Vale of Glamorgan Council area please contact your local council as details vary from region to region according to the facilities that are available, for example, some cannot accept any/all types of plastic or collect household kitchen waste and foil.  

There are Household Recycling Centres at Llandow Trading Estate and on Atlantic Trading Estate, Barry.  Both sites have recycling banks for: glass, paper, cans, Tetra Pak cartons, textiles, plastic, foil, garden waste, car batteries and waste oil.  Barry also has recycling banks for cardboard and wood.  For larger items such as dishwashers, electric radiators, fridge/freezers televisions, tumble dryers, washing machines, there is a ring and request collection scheme.  The Vale of Glamorgan website has an A-Z giving information on where to take your recycling.  There are recycling banks for glass, paper (ie no cardboard) and textiles in the Fox & Hounds car park, St. Brides Major. 

A

ADVERTISING LITERATURE   (NO plastic)

AEROSOLS   (Ensure drained and remove lids)

Return to Occupational Therapy Department at local hospital.
Return/donate to Social Services.

BATTERIES   (Car and domestic-use such as from cameras, clocks, torches, toys, etc.)

Many shops now have collection containers for domestic-use batteries. 
Take all types of battery to Household Recycling Centre. 

BEDDING & BLANKETS   (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable for donation)

Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting homeless people or charity shop.
Donate to animal charity.  Visit Dogs Trust website who run a re-homing centre at Pen-y-fai, Bridgend.

BICYCLES   (Ensure in good condition and check whether suitable for donation)

Donate to Playgroup or Youth Club. 

Donate to the New Deal project in Barry which is a scheme offering young people the chance to have training in bike maintenance and repairs.  The bicycles are then sold to help fund the project.  Free collection service every Tuesday within the Vale.  Ring 01446 421508 for more details.  There is also a facility at the Vale of Glamorgan's Holm View Leisure Centre for bikes to be repaired or used for spares. 

Visit Re-Cycle website which collects, repairs and ships second hand bicycles and spare parts to Africa to improve the lives of those who have to travel many miles on a daily basis. 

Take to Household Recycling Centre. 

BOOKS

Donate to charity shop, local school, church, etc., for bring and buy sales, or donate/sell to second hand bookshop.

Visit Bridgend Lions Club website which since 1994 has held a charity book fair every year around March/April to raise money for a variety of local good causes.  Unwanted or surplus books, CDs and DVDs can usually be taken to the YMCA, Angel Street, Bridgend, between the hours of 10.00 am and 5.00 pm weekdays for several months before the event.  If you live in the Bridgend area, look out for notices in the local press and shops which also give telephone number/s to ring to arrange collection of larger quantities. 

C          BACK TO ALPHABETICAL SEARCH

CANS   (Aluminium, tinplate or steel.  This includes, for example, baked beans, soup, fish, soft drinks, beer, pet food tins.  Remember to rinse/wash & squash as items contaminated with food will be left behind.  No paint tins)

CARDBOARD   (Do not put in paper banks.  Remove any packaging, e.g. plastic and polystyrene.  No takeaway cardboard drink cups.) 

Flatten and recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service.  This includes Tetra Pak fruit juice, milk, pet-food pouches and soup cartons.

CLOTHES

COMICS

Donate to doctors/dentists surgery for waiting room, Out Patients Department/Children’s Centre at local hospital/clinic or charity shop.
Recycle via the Vale of Glamorgan kerbside collection service or container/s in Fox & Hounds car park at Supermarket or Household Recycling Centre. 

CROCKERY & CUTLERY

Donate to homeless hostel or charity supporting the homeless, charity shop or local playgroup/club.
Donate to local school, church, etc., for bring and buy sales. 

Broken or cracked ceramic items, china, crockery, heavy-duty glassware,  and porcelain (bowls, cups, jugs, mugs, ovenware, plates, Pyrex, can be taken to Household Recycling Centre and placed in the containers for use as hardcore. 

CRUTCHES

Return to Accident & Emergency Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
Return to Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy Department at your local hospital.
Donate to old people’s home.

DRINK AND FOOD CARTONS   (Such as Tetra Pak for soup, fruit juice and pet-food pouches; ensure cartons are empty and clean)

EASTER EGGS

Visit Bridge FM website a local radio station based in Bridgend which organise Make a Local Child Smile campaigns; Easter Eggs are collected then given to local charities for distribution throughout the area. 

ELECTRICAL ITEMS   (This includes appliances such as: cookers, freezers, fridges, microwaves, washing machines; and household equipment such as computer monitors, energy saving bulbs, fluorescent tubes and TVs; as well as small items such as CD/DVD players, clocks, DIY tools, hairdryers, irons, kettles, keyboards, radios and toasters; and even electric toys, PSP games, shavers, toothbrushes.) 

Take to Household Recycling Centre.  Vale of Glamorgan Council can arrange to collect large, bulky electrical equipment. 

ENGINE OIL

Take to Household Recycling Centre. 

F           BACK TO ALPHABETICAL SEARCH

FOIL   (This includes take-away cartons, kitchen foil, glass milk bottle tops, frozen food containers, pie dishes etc., which should be washed to avoid smells and squashed.  No metallised plastic film such as that used for some bread, crisp and biscuit packets.  To check, scrunch the packet into a ball; if it retains its shape as a ball it is foil but if it returns to its original shape then it is metallised plastic and cannot be recycled )

Recycle via Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service or take to the recycling centre at Ty Verlon Industrial Estate, Barry, run by charity Scope.  Visit The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) which sponsors this scheme.  Some supermarkets such as Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose also have banks to collect clean foil.

FOREIGN CURRENCY

Visit Barnardo's website which helps children, young people in need and the most vulnerable, as well as providing fostering and adoption services. 

Note:  Many charities will accept coins. 

FURNITURE   (Ensure in good condition and of good quality, and check whether suitable item/s for donation)

Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting the homeless or charity shop. 

Visit British Red Cross website which helps people affected by natural disasters, to find missing relatives and offers many other types of assistance, as well as teaching first aid.  The Llantwit Major shop accepts furniture of good quality.

From April to November  recycle via the Vale of Glamorgan kerbside collection. (time scale extended in 2008)
From December to March use the Vale of Glamorgan Ring and Request collection service on 01446 700111.
Vale of Glamorgan Council will accept: grass cuttings; chopped woody stems; shrub & hedge pruning/clippings and debris; leaves; plants; flowers; and non-invasive weeds; Place in biodegradable or re-usable fabric bags purchased from the Vale of Glamorgan Council Office.  No invasive weeds (e.g. Japanese Knotweed); kitchen waste (e.g. vegetable peelings); animal waste; plastic, including plant pots; logs; rubble or stones; soil; turf; or general rubbish.  Bags containing this type of refuse will be left behind. 

Take to Household Recycling Centre for recycling/disposal. 

Alternatively, compost garden waste.  You can also add the following to your domestic compost: uncooked fruit and vegetable peelings and waste; tea bags; coffee grounds; cardboard egg boxes; crushed eggshells; small amounts of paper and cardboard; wood-stove ashes; small amount of herbivore pet waste (eg rabbit, guinea pig).  Do not include cooked fruit and vegetables, dairy products, fish, meat or cat litter, dog excrement or weeds.  Visit Original Organics website which supplies home compost bins (discounted for Vale of Glamorgan residents) or to order call them direct on 01884 841 515.

GLASS JARS AND BOTTLES   (This includes mincemeat, pasta, paste, jam jars, non-refund pop/beer/wine bottles, etc.  Remember to remove tops/caps.   Rinse jars/bottles before recycling as items contaminated with food will be left behind.  Return milk bottles to the milkman.  No Pyrex or Visionware cooking dishes, glass crockery, window panes or broken glass.)  See separate entry for Pyrex

Visit Help the Aged website which collects spectacles and sends them to opticians all over the world, particularly Africa, India and Brazil.

Donate to St. Brides Major Primary School who have a collection box in the foyer for ink cartridges.

IT & COMPUTER EQUIPMENT  (Ensure to check whether suitable item/s for donation)

Visit Oxfam website which collects old computer equipment from businesses to repair then resell to raise funds for its work in more than 40 countries and its campaign to make trade fair; Visit Recycle-IT website which collects computers and redistributes them to schools and non-profit making community projects.  Equipment should not be too old/out of date and there may be a minimum number required to make the donation viable.

JAM AND/OR PICKLE JARS

Re-use for home-made preserves; if there is a bee keeper in the area it is possible that small glass jars would be welcomed for the storage of honey.  If you cannot find anyone who would like them, recycle with glass.

JEWELLERY

Many jewellers will take your old pieces and make them into something new; this can be by melting down rings and bracelets or by fashioning items into something new.  Costume jewellery can be transformed too; visit Black Pearl's website for information on their discarded jewels service. 

JUNK MAIL, LEAFLETS, CIRCULARS   (No envelopes)

Office paper, especially that used for printers, is of a high quality and it may be feasible to start a recycling scheme in the workplace and send it to a waste paper merchant.

OIL

Take cooking oil to Household Recycling Centre. 

Engine oil can be taken to Household Recycling Centre or a car-servicing garage for disposal. 

P           BACK TO ALPHABETICAL SEARCH

PLASTIC   (Hard plastic such as flower pots, garden furniture, old children's toys, UPVC window frames, rulers, office equipment and even your kerbside box if it has cracked and is therefore unusable)

 

Take to Household Recycling Centre. 

 

PLASTIC BOTTLES, CONTAINERS, POTS, TUBS AND PACKAGING (This includes: milk, mineral water, pop, shampoo and washing up liquid bottles; ice cream, butter, cheese spread tubs; ready meals and take-away food containers; fruit punnets; yoghurt, fromage frais pots.  Plastic lids can be recycled but need to be removed.  Other suitable items are bubblewrap, cellophane, clingfilm.  Remember to rinse/wash & squash before recycling as contaminated items [eg with food] will be left behind.  No larger items, for example garden furniture, washing-up bowls and toys, see note below.  No polystyrene trays.)

Note: Many schools in the Bridgend area participate in a scheme whereby the plastic ring carriers  that hold multiple food and drink cans together (known as Ringos) are collected for recycling and in doing so have the opportunity to win cash prizes.  Some charities collect the green tops from milk bottles. 

PLASTIC CARRIER BAGS

Re-use as bin liners. 

Reduce the number of plastic bags you use by taking advantage of Bag for Life scheme operated by most supermarkets. 

Recycle via the Vale of Glamorgan Council kerbside collection service.  This includes clean food bags such as for bread and fruit.  Items contaminated by food will be left behind.

PRINTER CARTRIDGES   See separate entries for inkjet, and laser/toner cartridges

Printer cartridges are used by copiers, fax machines and printers in both homes and businesses.  If an inkjet has an integral print head (indicated by a metal plate on the back) it is suitable for donation.  Laser/toner cartridges for printers and photocopiers can often be returned via freepost in the box your new cartridge came in or free collection may be possible.  Check what type/make are accepted with the maker/charity you would like to support. 

Visit Lasertech website which provides recycling bins for printer cartridges, and can donate to the charity of your choice.

Visit Recycling Appeal website which assists in the collection and recycling of old and empty inkjet and laser/toner cartridges that can help raise funds for charity.

No items listed but remember to reduce, re-use, recycle, repair and reclaim! 

Remember to take your litter home for disposal and to recycle as much as possible.  The Marine Conservation Society hold a regular Beachwatch Big Weekend.  In 2009 volunteers collected 2,670 items from Porthkerry Beach in Barry that included: fishing line; drink cans and bottles; bits of plastic; pieces of clothing; shoes and heels, metal ladder; wheel hub; bunk beds.  The 2010 Marine Conservation Society survey showed an increase in inappropriate items, which are difficult to extract from the sewerage system, that had been flushed down toilets.  Volunteers collected more than 3,000 bags of rubbish from 376 beaches.

SHOES

Donate to homeless hostel, charity supporting the homeless or charity shop.

Visit Brantano website that runs promotions during which old shoes can be taken into the store.  Until 2014 there was a branch in Bridgend; in 2005, any customer who took shoes along was given a voucher worth £5 off a new pair and for every £5 voucher redeemed, 50p was donated to Children in Need.  Children were also given free colouring sets worth £5 and schools had a chance to win £100 if their name was mentioned when the shoes were handed over.  During another campaign, customers took their old shoes to collection point in the store for them to be recycled or sold off second-hand with all proceeds going to charity.  In 2013, customers handing over an old pair of shoes would receive discount off a new pair.  Look out for details in the local press advertising when this type of event will be held.

Donate to charity such as Dogs Trust Re-homing Centre at Pen-y-fai, Bridgend which collects stamps to raise funds.

Visit RNIB (Royal National Institute of the Blind) website which collects stamps to raise funds.

Visit RNIB (Royal National Institute of the Blind) website.  Thanks to a partnership scheme with the Vale Council, local residents can help raise funds for a local guide dog puppy by recycling their old mobile phones.  Collection boxes can be found at the following locations: Civic Offices in Barry; and council offices in: Penarth; Cowbridge; Llantwit Major; and the Alps Depot, Wenvoe.

VEHICLES

Vale residents can dispose of unwanted vehicles via a scheme run by The Vale Community Safety Partnership (consisting of the council, South Wales Police, South Wales Fire Service and local housing associations).  Ring the Vale of Glamorgan Council Office to arrange free collection and recycling of abandoned vehicles by local contractor Bayliss.  In 2004/05 the number vehicles reported abandoned was 375 and for 2003/04 the figure was 530.

Return metal walking sticks and crutches to the Accident & Emergency Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital or the Unit that issued them to you. 

Return metal or wooden walking sticks and crutches, walking frames and aids to the Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy Department at your local hospital. 

Donate to Social Services, Care Home, Day Centre or charity shop - please note not all items are suitable and some organisations do not have the facilities to accept them.

XMAS, BIRTHDAY & GREETINGS CARDS AND WRAPPING PAPER   (Do not put greetings cards or cardboard in paper banks as they are made from different grades of paper/card and cannot be accepted.  The majority of Christmas wrapping paper cannot be recycled owing to its glitter, foil and waxed content so to avoid contamination of the load do not include this with your recycling; however, if you have a garden compost, you may wish to dispose of it in this way.) 

Use old cards to make gift tags ready for next Christmas!  Residents can recycle plain greetings and Christmas cards via the kerbside cardboard collection service but must ensure that extra decorative items on them, such as beads, glitter, glue plastic, polystyrene, metal pieces and ribbons, are removed. 

A Christmas Card recycling bin was placed in the foyer of 500 Sainsbury's stores, including Bridgend, from 26th December 2012 until 15th January 2013 with a donation made to the FSC based on the volume collected.  Visit Forest Stewardship Council website.  In the 2011/12 season nearly 50 tonnes of cards were recycled in this way. 

XMAS GIFTS

Donate unwanted new Christmas presents to charity or local schools, groups, clubs, etc., for raffle prizes. 

Buy an extra present and donate it to a local charity.  Visit Ty Hafan The Family Hospice for Young Lives website.  Visit Bridge FM website a local radio station based in Bridgend which organises Make a Local Child Smile campaigns; Christmas gifts are collected then given to local charities/centres for distribution throughout the area. 

XMAS TREES

After the festive season, recycle your (real) Christmas tree via the Vale of Glamorgan collection service; check their website, the local press or posters in village shops or Community Council notice boards advising when you can put your (real) Christmas tree out with your rubbish ready for recycling.  This is usually on the next normal collection day following the week that included Twelfth Night (ie 6th January).  Remember to remove all decorations.

Recycle via St. Brides Major School.  Visit Yellow Woods Challenge website which in partnership with The Vale Council organises a campaign whereby schoolchildren collect as many Yellow Pages telephone directories as possible for recycling into various products, raising funds for the Trust and schools.
