A local community library service manned and run by volunteers is held on Saturdays from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon and Wednesdays from 3.30 pm to 7.00 pm in St. Brides Major Church Hall.  Green and blue recycling bags are also for sale.

CARERS GROUPS AND SUPPORT     Back to Top 

If you are a carer in the Vale of Glamorgan and would like to chat with others in the same or similar situation, search Facebook for the Vale Carers Page and become a member; you can share as much or as little information as you like by changing your Facebook account security settings.  If you would like IT sessions to help you learn how to use Facebook, contact the Parents Federation on 02920 227800 and ask about training courses for carers. 

Age Concern run a weekly club that meets from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon each Wednesday in Ewenny Community Village Hall (the Old School) for tea/coffee and biscuits.  Monthly speakers and activities.  For more information ring Jane Platts on 01446 795631. 

Bridgend Carers Centre hold a drop-in session on Mondays between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm at 87 Park Street, Bridgend, or ring 01656 658479 to arrange an appointment.  This charitable organisation provides support for unpaid carers who are caring for friends, neighbours or family members. 

Crossroads offers support and assistance to present (and past) carers as well as organising events, information days, outings and running group meetings in the Barry, Penarth and Vale areas.  The Western Vale Social Group for those with dementia and their carers usually meets on the last Wednesday of the month at The Boverton Castle, Llantwit Major.  Ring the office on 02920 700057 for more details.  Visit Crossroads website

Music group for adults and children of all standards from Grade 2 onwards.  Rehearsals on Tuesdays from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm in St. Brides Major Church Hall.  Why not come along and play your favourite classics and popular tunes. 

ORRA  (Ogmore Retired Residents Association)          Back to Top 

ORRA meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at 2.00 pm in All Saints Church, Southerndown, during term time; members usually meet for lunch in The Watermill for the first session of each term and for special events.  The Association also organises occasional coach trips.  All are welcome to these informal social occasions.

Thursday Club  Sadly, Thursday Club closed on 14th July, 2011 due to lack of membership; this was 64 years to the day that it had begun.  Information on guest speakers, demonstrations and other general meetings retained for interest.

Merthyr Mawr WI. meet at Corntown Village Hall on the first Wednesday of every month, starting at 7.00 pm.   

Southerndown WI. meet in the Church Hall, St. Brides Major on the second Thursday every month, starting at 7.15 pm.  Also, coffee mornings once a month.

(1)  RECORDER GROUP meets Mondays at 5.30 pm in the Vicarage. 

(2)  BELL RINGERS meet Mondays at 7.00 pm in the Church. 

(3)  JUNIOR RECORDER GROUP meets Wednesdays 4.30 pm in the Church Hall. 

(4)  ST. BRIDGET'S ORCHESTRA meets Wednesdays at 6.00 pm in the Church Hall. 

(5)  BIBLE STUDY GROUP meets after Eucharist Service in St. Bridget's Church on Wednesdays at 8.00 pm.  Look at Scripture readings for the following Sunday. 

(6)  PARENTS & TODDLERS meet Fridays from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon in the Church Hall. 

(7)  ART GROUP meets on the second and third Fridays of the month from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm in the Church Hall.  Both beginners and the more experienced are welcome to join this friendly and informal group.  Bring paints and paper. 

(8)  YOUTH CLUB meets Sundays from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm in the Church Hall.  For school years 6-9.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on their first visit for registration. 

(9)  SUNDAY SCHOOL meets every week at 9.45 am in the Church Hall except the first Sunday of the month, when there is a family service at 11.00 am in St. Bridget's Church.

OGMORE-BY-SEA EVANGELICAL CHURCH          Back to Top 

(1)  TOYBOX TODDLERS for pre-school children and their parents meet in the Church at 10.30 am on Tuesdays.  (not currently running owing to lack of numbers) 

(2)  BIBLE STUDY AND PRAYER MEETING in the Church at 7.30 pm on Tuesdays.  Courses held regularly. 

(3)  FRIDAY CLUB for junior and primary school children meets in the Church from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm on Fridays.  Bible story, songs, games and tuck shop.   

(4)  SUNDAY SCHOOL held for younger children during the Sunday Morning Service. 

(5)  OGMORE YOUTH GROUP for young people in senior school meets after the evening Church Service from 7.45 pm to 9.15 pm on Sundays. 

(6)  CARING FOR CARERS GROUP met for the first time on Saturday, 11th July 2009 with the hope that regular meetings would be held quarterly or on the third Saturday of every other month if sufficient numbers attended.  All welcome - you do not need to be resident in the village to go along.  Also see Carers Groups and Support entry above.

St. Brides Major Playgroup for children 2-4 years old.  Held in the Church Hall, St. Brides Major, Monday-Thursday from 9.00 am till 2.55 pm and Friday 12.00 noon to 2.55 pm. 

BOYS BRIGADE 2nd Llantwit Major  Back to Top 

The Boys' Brigade 2nd Llantwit Major Company meet at the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church.  Company Section (11 to 15 years) and Seniors (15 years upwards) meet on Tuesday evenings.  Anchors (5 to 8 years) and Junior Section (9 to 11 years) meet on Thursday evenings.

Ogmore Down Cubs meet from 6.30 pm to 7.45 pm and Scouts meet from 7.45 pm to 9.00 pm in the Scout Hall, St. Brides Major, on Monday evenings.

For 11 to 16 year olds, held every Tuesday during term time from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm at the Sports Pavilion, Heol y Slough, St. Brides Major.  Many activities including indoor and outdoor games.  Internet facilities and playstation.  Organised by Vale of Glamorgan Council.  Members come from Ewenny, Ogmore-by-Sea, St. Brides Major, Southerndown and surrounding area.  This group originally met at Ogmore Centre Trust. 

ST. BRIDES MAJOR RIDING & TREKKING CENTRE          Back to Top 

St. Brides Major Riding and Trekking Centre runs a small, friendly club for youngsters from four years old that meets weekly and has an annual camp.  Learn to ride and improve your riding skills.  Learn about the care of your pony or horse, and stable management.  Also, horse riding for all the family from beginners to improvers as well as the more experienced rider.  Tel: Julie 01656 881962. 

ST. BRIDES MAJOR KEEP FIT CLUB          Back to Top 

Scouts Hall, St. Brides Major, from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm every Tuesday.  All ages / All abilities.  Qualified tuition, easy to follow.  Just for fun or to keep in trim, come and join in.  Formed in 1981.  Wear comfortable shoes or trainers and bring something to lie on for floor work, such as an old bath towel, thick blanket or floor mat. 

AEROBICS CLASS          Back to Top 

St. Brides Major Church Hall, at 7.30 pm every Monday.  Fancy feeling fitter?  Trying to get in trim?  Make a good start to the week ... join a qualified aerobics instructor for a fun fitness class aimed at adults of all abilities.  Wear comfortable clothes and trainers and bring some water to drink.

KARATE CLUB          Back to Top 

Thursday evenings, term time, in the School Hall, St. Brides Major.  Juniors 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm and Seniors 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm.  Come along and talk to Graham if you would like to know more or telephone 01446 774148.  Learn the art of karate with a qualified instructor; Karate is one of the most effective forms of self-defence and a good way to keep fit. 

SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB          Back to Top 

Lifeguard clubs are usually affiliated to a national body such as The Royal Lifesaving Society and/or the Surf Lifesaving Association of Wales.  Most clubs have three sections: Nippers or Rookies for ages 7 to 12; Youth for ages 12 to 19; Seniors; some also have a Masters group.  During the summer older members take part in volunteer patrols.  Training takes place at local swimming pools in the winter and there is the opportunity of working towards awards and exams as well as learning first aid.  Social and fundraising events are also held throughout the year.

Many cycling clubs hold pleasure rides, practice events, time trials and road races throughout the year that pass through the villages of our Parish.

Vale Cricket Club is based at Corntown Cricket Club, Ewenny; some coaching and training is held at Cowbridge School and Neath Cricket Club; Senior and Junior sides play Saturdays, Sundays and mid-week friendly fixtures; practice sessions and games are also played at Southerndown Cricket Pitch.

Unfortunately, we do not have details of any current clubs; however, we do have some details and photographs of Sporting EV from 2002.
